What is Imago Relationship Therapy?
Imago Relationship Therapy (IRT), was developed by Harville Hendrix, PhD. and Helen LaKelly Hunt, PhD. Imago states that we are born in relationship, we are wounded in relationship, and we are healed in relationship.
Our childhood experiences form an unconscious image or Imago that we unconsciously look for in a partner. This image usually contains one or more characteristics or traits of a caregiver with whom we experienced the most unmet needs.
Upon finding our Imago match, we enter the Romantic Stage of the relationship. Typically in this stage, we idealise our partner and minimise any behaviours or characteristics that may impact us negatively. In all relationships, this stage is inevitably followed by the Power Struggle Stage. With the power struggle stage, we experience tension with our partners as we come to understand they may have different perspectives and ways of being in the world than us. We begin to feel disconnected from our partner and engage in behaviours formed in our childhood that lead to further disconnection.
IRT helps couples become conscious of their childhood experiences that influence our patterns of behaviour and our perceptions in our relationships. With this new understanding, we are able to adopt new behaviours that create a new, deeper connection with our partners while continuing on the path of personal growth, often called the Conscious Stage of Relationship.
